Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a child, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford began to become attracted to acting in her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she wasn't a good fit. Ford, instead of applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement on her third attempt, applied and won a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall would go on to have recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993, but she made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate would also frequently work as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. However, Tate was soon gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
